Split column

Split a chosen field wherever an exact separator appears. Keep every resulting part in its own column and retain all other fields.

Fictional sample loaded for demonstration. Your file is not sent to a Rowlane server.

1. Bring in a table

CSV or TSV · UTF-8 text · up to 5 MiB, 20,000 records, and 100 columns

All values stay text, including IDs like 0017.
Quoted commas, quotes, and line breaks are preserved. Choose the delimiter if detection is wrong.

What this tool does

The separator is a literal string and can contain more than one character. The selected field is replaced by numbered part columns. The widest record determines the number of output columns; shorter records are padded with empty cells.

How to use it

  1. Choose the field to split and type the exact separator used in its values.
  2. Run the operation and inspect the generated part columns.
  3. Download the expanded table and confirm that each part landed in the intended field.

2. Check the input

Confirm the header and a few records before applying a rule.

Questions

What to expect

Are empty parts discarded?

No. An input such as west||active keeps an empty middle part.

Can I split at a space?

Yes. Enter one space or another exact separator. Leading and trailing spaces in each part are preserved.

Review the destination rules. A valid CSV or a clean report does not guarantee that another system will accept the file. Keep your original and verify any export before importing it.
