Sample rows

Select a seeded random sample without replacement. Reuse the same seed and unchanged input to reproduce the same subset.

Fictional sample loaded for demonstration. Your file is not sent to a Rowlane server.

1. Bring in a table

CSV or TSV · UTF-8 text · up to 5 MiB, 20,000 records, and 100 columns

All values stay text, including IDs like 0017.
Quoted commas, quotes, and line breaks are preserved. Choose the delimiter if detection is wrong.
Repeatable sample
Keep the same seed and input to reproduce the sample.

What this tool does

A seeded pseudo-random shuffle selects the requested number of distinct row positions. The selected rows are then returned in their original order. The seed is a reproducibility aid, not a cryptographic random source.

How to use it

  1. Enter a sample size from 1 through the number of input records.
  2. Enter and keep a seed value that identifies this sample.
  3. Run the operation, review the selected rows, and save the seed with your notes.

2. Check the input

Confirm the header and a few records before applying a rule.

Questions

What to expect

Does the sample preserve source order?

Yes. Random selection chooses the records, then the result is shown in the original order.

Can I use this as a statistically representative sample?

The selection is uniform over row positions, but representation still depends on how the source dataset was collected and whether rows are independent.

Review the destination rules. A valid CSV or a clean report does not guarantee that another system will accept the file. Keep your original and verify any export before importing it.
