Group summary

Group records by one exact text field and calculate a count, sum, average, minimum, or maximum for a chosen measure column.

Fictional sample loaded for demonstration. Your file is not sent to a Rowlane server.

1. Bring in a table

CSV or TSV · UTF-8 text · up to 5 MiB, 20,000 records, and 100 columns

All values stay text, including IDs like 0017.
Quoted commas, quotes, and line breaks are preserved. Choose the delimiter if detection is wrong.
Group and metric
Used by sum, average, minimum, and maximum. Count ignores this field.

What this tool does

Groups use exact values and are listed in first-seen order. Count includes every record in the group. Numeric calculations skip blank measure cells and stop if a nonblank measure is not a finite decimal number.

How to use it

  1. Choose the grouping field and, for a numeric calculation, the measure field.
  2. Select count, sum, average, minimum, or maximum.
  3. Run the summary and compare group totals with a known subset before using them.

2. Check the input

Confirm the header and a few records before applying a rule.

Questions

What to expect

What happens to blank group values?

All blank or whitespace-only labels form one empty group in the output.

Is count based on the measure column?

No. Count is the number of records in each group. Other aggregations use nonblank measure values.

Review the destination rules. A valid CSV or a clean report does not guarantee that another system will accept the file. Keep your original and verify any export before importing it.
