Combine fields with a visible separator
Joining fields is convenient for display, but it can remove boundaries that were clear in the original columns.
Select fields in source order
The selected fields are joined left to right and replaced by one new column at the first selected position. If you need a reversible transformation, make sure the separator cannot appear in the source values or keep the original file.
Decide what an empty field means
Including blanks preserves a positional separator. Skipping blanks produces more compact display text. Neither choice can tell whether an empty value was missing, intentionally empty, or not applicable.
Name the output for its use
Choose a descriptive header that does not collide with a field you kept. Then inspect records with missing values and embedded separators before using the combined field in another system.
