Two-way summary

Create a two-way summary from row and column categories. Count records or calculate a sum or average from one numeric field.

Fictional sample loaded for demonstration. Your file is not sent to a Rowlane server.

1. Bring in a table

CSV or TSV · UTF-8 text · up to 5 MiB, 20,000 records, and 100 columns

All values stay text, including IDs like 0017.
Quoted commas, quotes, and line breaks are preserved. Choose the delimiter if detection is wrong.

What this tool does

The selected row and column fields define the categories. Each output cell counts matching records or summarizes nonblank values from one numeric measure. Category labels are exact text; blank labels form a visible blank category.

How to use it

  1. Choose different fields for the row and column categories.
  2. Choose record count, or select a numeric measure for sum or average.
  3. Build the table and check its category labels, empty combinations, and output size before downloading.

2. Check the input

Confirm the header and a few records before applying a rule.

Questions

What to expect

What does an empty combination show?

Count and sum show 0 when no record matches. Average stays blank because there is no value to average.

Are similar labels combined?

Only blank or whitespace-only labels are grouped together. Other values compare exactly, including capitalization and surrounding spaces.

Review the destination rules. A valid CSV or a clean report does not guarantee that another system will accept the file. Keep your original and verify any export before importing it.
